California Waste Management

California is a leading member of the voluntary association of solid waste management companies and businesses which specialize in offering equipment and services important to the industry, including waste outsourcing, trash outsourcing, waste management, retail waste management and waste solutions. The "lower my trash bill" program was founded in 1965 to advance the efficiencies of collecting and processing recyclables and solid waste, ORRA provides legislative advocacy, education, group insurance, meeting facilities and advice on regulatory matters to its members particularly in terms of best trash hauler services and practices.

California is a member of the West Coast Refuse and Recycling Coalition (WCRRC), a regional association formed by ORRA and its counterparts in Washington and California, the Washington Refuse and Recycling Association and the California Refuse Removal Council whose charter is to advance the cause of the managed haulers and the competitive trash haulers while maintaining a strong presence with the retail trash management association.

Forty years ago, California began shaping our country's recycling future - one glass bottle at a time. Today, recycling is a core community value, widely practiced by residents and businesses. We now focus our efforts on the next frontier - preventing waste and using resources wisely - through community education, waste outsourcing, trash outsourcing, solid waste management business consulting, and the sale of reusable building materials through waste brokers and trash brokers.

Across California, more individuals, organizations, businesses, and government agencies are collecting materials for recycling than ever before. With the assistance of waste haulers, waste brokers, trash haulers and retail waste brokers, the number of curbside recycling programs has grown 500 percent over the past 5 years. In fact, waste audits have proved that in California recycling is now helping to recover more than one quarter of all waste generated in California. But keeping valuable resources out of landfills is only part of the recycling story. In Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, San Jose, Riverside, Davis, Oakland and Anaheim, waste audits have proven that recycling also creates new businesses that haul, process, and broker recovered materials, as well as companies that manufacture and distribute products made with recycled content. These recycling businesses put people to work in the retail waste management business.

Recycling is estimated to create nearly five times as many jobs as landfilling. One California waste audit study reported that 10,080 jobs, or 2.7 percent of all manufacturing jobs in the Los Angeles region of California, are attributed to recycling. The jobs created by recycling businesses, both in waste outsourcing and trash outsourcing, draw from the full spectrum of the labor market (ranging from low- and semi-skilled jobs to highly skilled jobs). Materials sorters, dispatchers, truck drivers, brokers, sales representatives, process engineers, and chemists are just some of the jobs needed in the recycling industry. Because it is the most populous U.S. state, California is one of the country's largest users of energy. However because of its mild weather and strong environmental movement, its per capita recycling and waste management energy use is one of the smallest of any U.S. state.

Due to the high electricity demand, California imports more electricity than any other state, so it is important to maximize all recycling efforts particularly through the use of waste outsourcing and trash outsourcing and stringent waste audits to keep costs down. As a result of the state's strong environmental movement, California has the some of the most aggressive renewable energy goals in the United States, with a target for California to obtain a third of its electricity from renewables by 2020. To achieve this goal California will have to depend on the trash haulers, waste haulers, the firms that utilize waste outsourcing and trash outsourcing as well as the retail waste management sector. Recycling is actively contributing to California's economic vitality.

One of the most obvious benefits of recycling and solid waste management is that as managed haulers become more efficient, particularly in working with waste brokers and trash brokers, less waste ends up in landfills and on the ground. Another large benefit is that new products are being created from recovered recyclables mostly from the retail waste management sector. This waste focus and other environmental waste solutions are part of a universal environmental program designed to help everyone with their waste spend, drop dumpster costs and perform a waste optimization that will lower my trash bill, lower your trash bill and make waste outsourcing a profitable business for the state. This allied waste focus can help all of us find the perfect solution to reduce, reuse and recycle our waste. It's the perfect way to help both the environment and your bottom line.
