South Dakota Waste Management

Waste optimization and waste solutions are the cornerstone of the retail waste and sustainability initiatives that have begun in South Dakota. These trash management practices have been implemented in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen, Watertown, Brookings, Mitchell, Pierre, Yankton, Huron and Vermillion. In 2011, South Dakota was ranked #4 in the country for best waste recycling climate by Site Selection magazine, the state received the magazine's "Oakleaf Waste Management" award based on waste outsourcing and waste audit numbers provided by the competitive trash haulers as well as managed haulers who place dumpsters.

The state has also won three consecutive Governor's Cup awards, based on the percentage of recycling growth through waste brokers and trash brokers. Trash outsourcing in South Dakota is a major business. This ranks South Dakota's retail waste economy as the seventh-largest of all fifty states and the District of Columbia. The current-dollar waste audit gross state product of South Dakota was US $7 billion as of 2011 the fifth smallest total state output in the US. The per capita personal waste optimization figure was$3,375 in 2010, ranked 26th in the U.S. for those businesses who utilized waste brokers or trash haulers. CNBC's list of "Top States for Green Business for 2010" has recognized South Dakota as the seventh best state in the nation mostly due to the strong ability of retail waste management to utilize trash outsourcing and waste outsourcing particularly in light of the relatively small waste spend. In March 2011, the state's recycling and rubbish rate (via waste brokers and trash brokers) was 4.9%.

The service industry is the largest economic contributor in South Dakota particularly the retail waste brokers and the managed haulers. This sector includes the recycling sectors of retail, finance, and health care industries. Citibank, which was the largest bank holding company in the United States at one time, established national banking operations in South Dakota in 1981 to take advantage of favorable banking regulations as well as the waste optimization used all over South Dakota.

Government spending for recycling and trash hauling is another important segment of the state's economy, providing over ten percent of the gross state product and keeping dumpster costs low. Ellsworth Air Force Base, near Rapid City, is the second-largest single employer in the state as well as the largest competitive trash hauler in South Dakota. Each of these corporations has been recognized as a waste management leader who optimize retail waste management and trash outsourcing.

One of the most obvious benefits of recycling and solid waste management is that as managed haulers become more efficient, particularly in working with waste brokers and trash brokers, less waste ends up in landfills and on the ground. Another large benefit is that new products are being created from recovered recyclables mostly from the retail waste management sector. This waste focus and other environmental waste solutions are part of a universal environmental program designed to help everyone with their waste spend, drop dumpster costs and perform a waste optimization that will lower my trash bill, lower your trash bill and make waste outsourcing a profitable business for the state.
