Kansas Waste Management

Across Kansas, more individuals, organizations, businesses, and government agencies are collecting materials for recycling than ever before. With the assistance of waste haulers, waste brokers, trash haulers and retail waste brokers, the number of curbside recycling programs has grown 500 percent over the past 5 years. In fact, waste audits have proved that in Kansas recycling is now helping to recover more than one quarter of all waste generated in the Hawkeye State. But keeping valuable resources out of landfills is only part of the recycling story.

In Wichita, Dodge City, Concordia, Topeka and Goodland, waste audits have proven that recycling also creates new businesses that haul, process, and broker recovered materials, as well as companies that manufacture and distribute products made with recycled content. These recycling businesses put people to work in the retail waste management business. Recycling is estimated to create nearly five times as many jobs as landfilling as well as lower dumpster costs.

One Kansas waste audit study reported that 10,080 jobs, or 2.7 percent of all manufacturing jobs in the Wichita region of Kansas, are attributed to recycling. The jobs created by recycling businesses , both in waste outsourcing and trash outsourcing, draw from the full spectrum of the labor market (ranging from low- and semi-skilled jobs to highly skilled jobs). Materials sorters, dispatchers, truck drivers, brokers, sales representatives, process engineers, and chemists are just some of the jobs needed in the recycling industry.

Recycling is actively contributing to Kansas' economic vitality. Some of the more vibrant businesses that are assisting competitive trash haulers are part of the "lower my trash bill" campaign and they include; Stutzman Recycling in Hutchinson who takes window and bottle glass and grinds it into various products including feed stock for a fiberglass insulation plant in McPherson, Kansas. Tons of cardboard and paper is sent to Tamko Roofing in Phillipsburg, Kansas to help make roofing products to re purpose for retail waste management. Tons of magazines and newspapers are sent to Central Fiber in Wellsville, Kansas to help make soil amendments, erosion control products, and cellulose insulation as well as lower dumpster costs.

Tons of junk mail, paper, and cardboard are sent to Sonoco in Hutchinson, Kansas for numerous packaging products and for oakleaf waste management to be processed by Waste Management, Inc. This specialty paper plant is one of the few in the world that makes specialty cardboard tubes for Pillsbury's bread products, as well as oatmeal containers and solid waste management recycling materials. Several companies make recycled lumber products such as picnic tables, park benches, car stops and dock bumpers. Several companies make feed bunkers from recycled tires. Others process tires for tire derived fuel in cement kilns and for playground materials. Tires are also mixed with plastics to make plastic lumber, picnic tables, park benches, car stops and dock bumpers.

One of the most obvious benefits of recycling and solid waste management is that as managed haulers become more efficient, particularly in working with waste brokers and trash brokers, less waste ends up in landfills and on the ground. Another large benefit is that new products are being created from recovered recyclables mostly from the retail waste management sector.
